As previously suggested the market is disruptive. Many smaller manufacturers are appearing whose value is based on lowest price performance and speed to market with the next product. This is a challenge to the dominant larger suppliers in terms of developing the skills and mind-set to create ‘bare’ products and time get them to market, much like the move from office desktop to home laptop in the PC world.
Technology and demand is not abating and those with unique measurement propositions can get ahead of the big players.
Certainly more products with broader functionality are coming to market in all forms of instrumentation, stand-alone, modular, tablet, usb instruments, wearable technology etc.
The proliferation of standards can enable confident switching of suppliers as long as the measurement protocols are standard as are the data sets and analysis tools.
Substitution of platform from stand-alone instruments to modular instrumentation continues but the balanced uptake still suggests a conservative market.
Some surveys of computer use in data acquisition also suggest a majority expect to use data acquisition equipment with a tablet in the near term. Does this show that tablet computers will have a huge impact in the Test and Measurement market or still to be proven?
This is only likely if T&M companies incorporate technologies that serve this market, including wireless integration and small-footprint drivers that support iOS and Android.
For now the market remains conservative and the big suppliers can dominate and protect from substitution by continuing to bring breakthrough technology to the market at a premium.
From all of these forces there appear to be many demands on suppliers. They have to be wary of new entrants in the low cost market but continually strive to be first to market with breakthrough technology to capture the next mass manufacturing wave.
The added complexity being the continued niggling persistence of modular offerings
Sitting pretty, playing one off against the other but having to keep an eye on who will survive.
It’s ok taking a chance on a technology that only needs to last a fleeting moment but in a test and measurement market where longevity and sustainability are key to continued company success there is always the more conservative option. One that will be with you in the future
